From mysterious storms of dance images from Portugal to exuberant rewritings of classics from Peru – NO LIMITS once again dares to explode perceived boundaries with theater and dance from around the world. Different programming focal points invite the audience to enter into a discussion about body images and self-empowerment. Germany’s largest and most important festival for disability and the performing arts shows what happens when questions about accessibility serve as the point of departure for a creative process and artists with different abilities not only participate, but play leadership roles in all of the artistic functions.

20 theater, dance and performance groups from 12 countries with over 50 performances will come together in a twelve-day diverse theater festival in collaboration with HAU Hebbel am Ufer, the RambaZamba Theater, Theater Thikwa, Ballhaus Ost and, for the first time, Theater an der Parkaue. A symposium, parties and international meeting formats for artists who work inclusively will round out the schedule of programming.

Is this piece about the eponymous bones or about the internality and externality of being human? Or about something else entirely? The encounter between the choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas and the ensemble Dançando com a Diferença is a mysterious storm of images. A panopticon of figures exercises birth and death, power and sometimes appropriation as well. A fascinating phantasmagoria is created over the course of meticulously choreographed scenes. Overwhelming, radical and, at times, unsettling, Freitas leaps beyond all modern patterns of dance and narration.

But what happens when the Horas and their new management take a trip into the future? Off into the universe, to distant galaxies, starry vortices and unknown planets? Planets inhabited by alien life forms, bureaucrats, philosophers, workers and creatures who have better things to do than “hold a steady job”? Science fiction squared, the potentiated truth of the power of invention? We promise new findings on work and leisure, but above all, real insights into life on distant planets with aliens, music, dance, bands, robots and many unknowns. First conceived as a play, now realised as a brilliant science-fiction film.

Inspired, in part, by Gustav Mahler's “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” led by her lived-experience as a disabled person, her memory of training as a classical singer and knowledge drawn from mountaineers and disabled peers, Claire Cunningham sets out to make a show where she traverses known and unfamiliar landscapes.

In this new solo Cunningham asks what it is to wander? To seek to scale great heights? What can be learned from those of us who reach for the ground through crutches as 4-legged creatures, the choreography of crip* navigation and the maps we would re-draw? Of scale and time and energy? What it means to keep going and, importantly, the wisdom to know when to turn back.

Join this internationally renowned disabled leader and choreographer for an evening-length work, where she comes to understand her own journeying as a love song - to the ground, to her disabled peers and the innate wisdom of crip* expertise and joy.

*Crip is a political and cultural identity embraced by some disabled individuals

Nothing is as it appears, nothing ever stays the way it was. But every dream comes to an end eventually.

Matthias Mosbach, who has been working closely with the RambaZamba Theater for many years, directs Shakespeare's play about the trials and tribulations of love, about the blurred lines between the sensual and the supernatural and about the boundaries between dream and reality.

Alban Berg drew inspiration for his opera from Georg Büchner's dramatic fragment Woyzeck. The simple soldier, harassed from all sides to such an extent he can only resist with an act of madness.

21 downbeat, the house band of the RambaZamba Theater, reworks Alban Berg's orchestral fragments, melody snippets and bits of libretto into a pop opera that drives Wozzeck, portrayed by puppeteer Hannah Elischer, across the stage with electronic sounds and straight into the open blade of his personal catastrophe.

Over the course of an entertaining birth preparation course, performers of Theater Thikwa and the feminist collective hannsjana negotiate the big political questions that are addressed to their bellies every day. For example, what goes in: beer, cake or children – and what is allowed to come out. In a humorous stage show, the performers in Bauchgefühl take responsibility for themselves and others, develop new forms of reproduction, parenthood and care – or consciously decide against sharing their bodies and attention with anyone.

In their Schule der Liebenden, the Swiss artists Daniel Cremer and Yanna Rüger ask how one can flirt and attentively touch while still respecting boundaries. Or, to put it briefly, how things work with love and self-love. This is a genre-busting artistic experience in a magical spatial installation that embeds the teaching bodies of Theater Hora and the audience in a school of life. And, to cap things off, we all watch a brightly colored sexual education film together. Learning about love for people with and without disabilities.

Four human beings tap their bodies, shake themselves and make grimaces. They ask “Are you ready?” to each other. Then they enter the orange-colored house – and come back out as animals. Tiere treffen Tiere tells a story, full of situational comedy, of unexpected encounters and the curiosity for the unknown. In doing so, the piece does not only surprise the audience, but the performers as well. There is no fixed text, no agreed-upon story – everything is created through improvisation and the collaboration with the audience members.

On this day, a mixed-able team from Theater Thikwa will spend some time with you and reflect on the piece Undressed by tanzbar_bremen. The workshop will be facilitated by the actors Louis Edler and Lukasz Loska as well as the theater educator Saskia Neuthe. You will take a closer look at images and topics from the piece, try some of the elements of the dance out for yourselves and, at the end, you will present a small showing. Live is a performance and entering into the world also means taking the stage. How much of ourselves, however, will be visible in the public performance?

In Undressed, the dancers from tanzbar_bremen pretty themselves up for the world and consciously enter into the theatrical space as a place for possibilities, a room of staging. Only gradually they attempt to shed the layers of the performance in order to reveal a view of what also wants to shine through. What do I disclose and how much of it do I disclose? This is an intimate performance between roles and personality.

A second of time can change a life. In Marc Brew’s case, it was a car accident that transformed him from a Ballet dancer into a paraplegic. An Accident / A Life reconstructs the accident and its consequences in minute detail. At the same time, it tells a story of vulnerability and resilience. The body of the dancer becomes a map of its own experiences.

With spectacular images, the members of the audience experience this battle for survival up close and personal. This is fantastic theatrical cinema that questions societally normalized images of people with disabilities and, at the same time, searches for new forms of movement.

Scarcely perceptibly, an alleged warm-up exercise becomes a flow of dancing movements, testing out the possibilities of different bodies intimately and cautiously. That is, until it suddenly explodes with pop songs.

Unusual Symptoms invites the members of the audience to discover the body and its significance in dance and in society anew. Somewhere in between explorations of physical diversity and joyful exuberance with a good dash of self-irony thrown in, the ensemble questions the hierarchies of classical dance and playfully redirects our gaze.

We want to talk about inclusive art and inclusive work: how can joint artistic work be successful? At this table, we can talk about future projects, visions and desires, but frustration and anger can also be shared and demands can be stated out loud.

The networking meeting is an invitation to find allies, exchange ideas and, most of all, to network. We will take care of the culinary side of things. Drinks will be available at the bar.

The hall of mirrors of Ballhaus Ost will transform into a space of sparkling encounters and glittering ecstasy. Beginning at 8:00 pm, the doors will open to let you into cozy salon rounds which will allow you to close out the festival in a chill manner with a drink and conversations. You can reinvent your outfit at the Tisch der Endlosen Möglichkeiten, or Table of Endless Possibilities, or try your luck in the Ecke der zahlreichen Wege, or Corner of Many Paths. Anyone who is looking to take a break can do so by finding some repose in the low-stimulus Oase des Schweigens, or Oasis of Silence.

Beginning at 8:30 pm, Anna Berndtson and Yingmei Duan will bring together everyone who is attending in an interactive performance that is part of Harmony Within the Noise.

And, at 10:00 pm, the CherrYO!kie Kollektiv will kick off a simply superlative karaoke show; an unforgettable dance party with sparkling costumes and brilliant song performances. The karaoke guests will shimmer in the spotlight, surrounded by glamorous background singers and dancers. This will be a fireworks show of delights where the atmosphere will simply explode – an ecstasy of loving empowerment which will enthrall every single person, on the stage as well as in front of the stage.

The finale of the intercultural exchange project MOBILE in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut: 25 artists and 8 theater and dance companies from Germany, France and Switzerland present their results in workshops and scenic experiments.

In summer 2024, the network of Goethe-Institutes in France brought together over 40 artists with a wide range of performing talents in the MOBILE project. They belong to eight renowned theater and dance companies from Germany, France and Switzerland. The intercultural exchange is now reaching its conclusion. Twenty-five of the artists with and without disabilities will come together in Berlin. After two intense days of workshops, the ensembles will present an insight into their collaborative artistic work and invite everyone interested to a day of workshops, scenic experiments and discussions.

A thousand small creatures work day and night to turn organic waste into something useful – a never-ending game with many crawling legs. After all, the world urgently needs new fertile soil.

In Kompost-Horror, everyone becomes players in the game. Audience members can work through the compost as dung beetles or earthworms. Playing against the audience are a team made up of actors from Theater an der Parkaue and Theater Thikwa. At the end of the day, who will create the soil for new life? This is an interactive game that deals with questions regarding sustainability and individual responsibility.

Anna Berndtson and Yingmei Duan bring together the performance locations of the festival which are located all over the city – theaters and public spaces, indoors and outdoors – with ten live performances that they have developed especially for NO LIMITS. The members of the audience, artists and organizers can also be incorporated. Harmony Within the Noise is a collaborative series of performances that allow the boundaries between art and the everyday to become blurred and take the members of the audience along with them on a journey of perception. In doing so, a variety of different media will stimulate the senses of the audience and are intended to open up new perspectives.
